WWE’s Roman Reigns gives up title due to leukaemia. WWE star Roman Reigns is giving up his Universal Championship title because he has leukaemia. The four-time world champion told fans on Monday he had been diagnosed with the disease 11 years ago but was in remission.
Just when one thought that Roman Reigns would go on to become one of the most successful WWE Universal champions, he was diagnosed with leukemia again, which forced him to relinquish his title in just two months after he won it by defeating Brock Lesnar. He has frequently faced Lesnar but failed to win the title. In 2018 itself, Reigns lost to him twice before finally pinning him at WWE SummerSlam.
Reigns was to defend his title against Lesnar and Braun Strowman at WWE Crown Jewel but has been withdrawn now. WWE hasn’t named any replacement for Reigns for the title match and it will be a one-on-one match between Lesnar and Strowman.
Reigns, who publically announced about leukemia on Monday Night Raw, received a send-off from fellow wrestlers. The Big Dog took to Twitter to thank everyone who reached out to him and also confirmed that he will make his in-ring comeback.
“Thank you to everyone who’s reached out…I can’t put into words what it means to me. Your energy and positivity motivate me to get better quickly to get back in the ring, but for now I’m going to spend time with my family and focus on health. Thank you – Joe/Roman,” he wrote on Twitter.
The exit of Reigns also saw the end of The Shield for now as Dean Ambrose turned heel and attacked Seth Rollins even after the duo won the tag team titles by defeating Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler. Reigns played a key role in keeping The Shield united but after his exit, the team broke.
The future of WWE tag team titles is also in balance. It is sure that Rollins and Ambrose will not team up and might give away the titles. They are expected to face other for WWE Intercontinental title at WWE Crown Jewel next month.
